AI in everyday life: Where we already encounter artificial intelligence today

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a hotly debated topic in recent years and is already being applied in many areas of our everyday lives. Even as private individuals, we encounter AI in many forms such as voice assistants, recommendation systems, image recognition and much more.

One of the most obvious examples of AI that we encounter in everyday life are voice assistants such as “Alexa”* or “Siri”*. We as humans can give these devices commands and ask questions, which are then processed by the voice assistant accordingly. These systems use advanced technologies such as machine learning and natural language processing to understand our requests and provide appropriate answers. We can use them to play music, create shopping lists, read out messages, activate lights and much more.

Another example of AI in our everyday lives are recommendation systems used by online shops and streaming services. These systems analyse our activities and preferences to suggest suitable products or content. They recognise patterns in our behaviour and interests in order to give us appropriate recommendations based on them. An example of this are online shops that recommend products that might match our interests, or streaming services that suggest films or series that should match our tastes.

AI is also used in image processing, especially in facial recognition in smartphones. This enables easier unlocking of the device and helps to increase security. This technology is also being used extensively in surveillance technology and security.

In medicine, there are also examples of applications for artificial intelligence: first and foremost, diagnostic support, which enables faster and more precise diagnoses. In finance, algorithms are also used to better assess risks or make portfolio decisions.

AI is now present in many aspects of our everyday lives and will become even more important in the future, influencing the way we work, live and interact. It is important to consider the potential impact of AI on society and the environment and to ensure that the use of AI is positive for all. Responsible use of AI can help ensure that we reap the full benefits of AI without accepting negative impacts on society.
